“I design to celebrate a woman’s inner strength, to inspire real women and make them feel confident and beautiful. With the cut of the fabric, the color, the drape of the dress — I have confidence that I can make any woman beautiful. Any size, any nationality, any age… All women are entitled to feel beautiful. Thank you so much for being my muse.”
Marymount is proud to honor designer Tadashi Shoji at this year’s Portfolio in Motion. Shoji is a Japanese-born American women’s designer, notorious for his elegant evening gowns and stunning red carpet looks. At a young age, Shoji studied fine art in Tokyo and proceeded to study fashion design upon moving to Los Angeles in the early 1970s. In 1982, Shoji launched his own label, Tadashi Shoji. His design aesthetic is appealing to all ages and figures. Some of his signature looks possess flattering cuts and impeccable draping. Currently, the brand is carried in over 4,000 specialty or department stores, including international locations. In 2012, he was accepted into the Council of Fashion Designers of America. Some of Tadashi Shoji’s loyal followers include celebrities such as Dita Von Teese, Helen Mirren and Katy Perry. Again, Portfolio in Motion is thrilled to host Tadashi Shoji at this year’s opening night, on May 2nd.

I love everything about fashion show production, but my heart is truly where the magic happens—backstage! It has always been the best part of Portfolio in Motion–from the chaos of the dressers rushing to get their models dressed to the models running barefoot to make it on stage on time. The time pressure, the excitement, and the chaos are what make every moment of the process worthwhile! The moment the model walks on stage, and you know she looks flawless, because of you–that feeling is priceless! Now that I am a senior, I feel honored to be able to lead the team of the dressers who make the magic happen.
“If there is one thing about this industry I love, it is all the magic that is created backstage. Even though it is stressful, we always make it look effortless!” –Dayle Angus (Backstage Management Specialist)
“I am very excited to be involved with the backstage team, because I love the high-intensity environment behind the scenes of the Portfolio in Motion show. The backstage team does so much work to make sure everything goes perfectly, and I can’t wait to be a part of that on the nights of the show!” – Erin Wright (Backstage Management Team Member)
“Backstage is where everything happens – it’s crazy, hectic, fun, and exciting! I can’t wait until May to experience, first-hand, everything fall into place.” – Amanda Fenzau (Backstage Management Team Member)

We are in the process of creating our ticket stub design, while we prepare for ticket sales! In addition to selling tickets on-campus and at the entrance of the show, we also sell tickets online. We began selling tickets online for last year’s show, Gilded Forest. It was a huge success, so we’re continuing it this year as well. It is extremely convenient and will also save time for those who would like to attend the show and cannot come to campus to purchase tickets. By selling tickets online, Portfolio In Motion will reach a wider audience, while gaining more exposure throughout the community.
Online ticket sales will begin soon, and we will post a link as soon as possible! Stay posted for additional information about when and where you can purchase your tickets for Portfolio In Motion 2013 Cosmic Dreaming. We’re looking forward to seeing you there!
With each and every day we are getting closer to Portfolio in Motion 2013 and before we know it, it will be show time! That being said, we just completed Garment Review #2 on Wednesday, March 13. It is hard to believe we only have one garment review left. Garment Review #2 was dedicated to the first two garments from the senior designer’s lines, in addition to resubmissions from Garment Review #1. Overall, the garment review was very successful and we received many unique garments that we know the audience will love! The styles of the garments ranged from floral spring dresses to South Asian inspired gowns and fun beach cover-ups. We hope you are just as excited as we are to see the show come together in its final production. See you on the runway!

The PR team will soon begin the process of looking over the Lyrics and Commentary projects from the Fashion Show Production class. These projects will serve as inspiration for scene names for this year’s show and be related to the theme, “Cosmic Dreaming”. A few of my favorite quotes that I came across during my own personal search are as follows:
“When once you have tasted flight, you will forever walk the earth with your Eyes Turned Skyward, for there you have been, and there you will always long to return.”
“There wouldn’t be a sky full of stars if we were all meant to wish on the same one.”
― Frances Clark
Although these quotes does don’t necessarily mention “dreaming”, I think they allude to the concept of dreaming and looking towards the sky and space. I really enjoy looking at quotes and the other aspects of this project, because they allow the PR team the opportunity to have creative freedom for an important part of the show.
It’s hard to believe that all the work the students are doing is starting to come together. Soon we will put up information about ticket sales, and we are working on the design for the tickets. I’m excited to see the rest of the show progress and develop into a full-fledge fashion show.
